 Aircraft imported into Canada will be issued an Certificate of Airworthiness in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 507 and Standard 507. ASP Aviation Services can issue Certificates of Airworthiness for aircraft certified under CAR 523 and 525 or FAA regulations Part 23 and 25.

Aircraft exported from Canada will be issued an Export Airworthiness Certificate in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 509 and Standard 509. ASP Aviation Services can issue Export Certificates of Airworthiness for aircraft certified under CAR 523 and 525 or FAA regulations Part 23 and 25.

Export Certificate of Airworthiness

 Aircraft imported into Canada will be issued an Certificate of Airworthiness in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 507 and Standard 507. Maintenance and Manufacturing Staff Instruction, MSI 26, will be used as an importation checklist. MSI 26 provides checklists for aircraft imported into Canada with or without an Export C of A

 Aircraft imported into Canada will be issued an Certificate of Airworthiness in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 507 and Standard 507. Maintenance and Manufacturing Staff Instruction, MSI 26, will be used as an importation checklist. MSI 26 provides checklists for aircraft imported into Canada with or without an Export C of A. For aircraft imported into Canada with an Export C of A  the EAC must contain the following information: 

  1. A certification to the type design specified in the Canadian Type Certificate or a Transport  Canada accepted Type Certificate. 
  2. A list of any major modifications or repairs approved by the country of export and embodied on the aircraft. It is imperative that all major repairs and modifications be reviewed early in the importation process. This will ensure that there is adequate time to bring all repairs and modifications up to Transport Canada standards. The issuance of Supplemental Type Certificates Limited, Repair Design Approvals etc. may be required. 
  3. A list of all applicable airworthiness Directives or equivalent notices, issued by the country of export, indicating which have been complied with. 


Below is a list of documents that must be compiled and submitted at time of import:

  1. Copy of signed application form 24-0043.
  2. Copy of weight and balance, equipment list and electrical load analyses.  This will include a copy of the actual weighing report, subsequent amendments and applicable addendums. 
  3. Importation worksheet MSI 26. Completed and initialed as required.
  4. Copies of appropriate sections of the maintenance records. This will include copies of the Canadian Airframe, Engine and Propeller Logbooks.
  5. List of modifications. This will include a copy of all Major Modification and Repair Reports, FAA 337 forms, Supplemental Type Certificates, Limited Supplemental Type Certificates etc. All repairs and modifications must be acceptable in accordance with CAR 571.
  6. List of applicable Airworthiness Directives. This will include all applicable Canadian AWD's and all applicable AWD's from the country of manufacture.
  7. Verification of all life limited and TBO parts and components.
  8. Engine data respecting last overhaul, Hot Section Inspection etc.
  9. Details of any special Canadian Requirements. These "Special Requirements" will be listed in the aircraft Type Certificate.
  10. Copy of Aircraft Maintenance Schedule. This will include a Transport Canada approved MSA if the aircraft is commercially operated. Private aircraft will comply with Appendix B of Standard 625. All aircraft must comply with Appendix C of Standard 625.
  11. Details of deficiencies noted during inspection.
  12. Copy of work report required to bring the aircraft into compliance
  13. Details of any aging aircraft / supplemental structural inspection programs etc.
  14. Additional information. This will include a copy of the current Certificate of Registration and the coversheet of the current flight manual and any supplements.
  15. Copy of the Type Certificate utilized. This will include current aircraft, engine and propeller Type Certificates.

Export Certificate of Airworthiness

 Aircraft exported from Canada will be issued an Export Airworthiness Certificate in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 509 and Standard 509. Maintenance and Manufacturing Staff Instruction, MSI 38, shall be used as an exportation checklist. The issuance of an Export C of A does not constitute an authority to fly the aircraft. T

 Aircraft exported from Canada will be issued an Export Airworthiness Certificate in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 509 and Standard 509. Maintenance and Manufacturing Staff Instruction, MSI 38, shall be used as an exportation checklist. The issuance of an Export C of A does not constitute an authority to fly the aircraft. There must be a valid C of A or flight permit in effect.


Below is a list of documents that must be compiled and submitted at time of export:

  1. Copy of signed application form 24-0050.
  2. Copy of weight and balance, equipment list and electrical load analyses.  This will include a copy of the actual weighing report, subsequent amendments and applicable addendums. 
  3. Exportation worksheet MSI 38. Completed and initialed as required.
  4. Copies of appropriate sections of the maintenance records. This will include copies of the Canadian Airframe, Engine and Propeller Logbooks.

An MDM is someone who has been delegated by the Minister of Transport to issue a Certificate of Airworthiness, Certificate of Airworthiness - Restricted or an Export Airworthiness Certificate on behalf of Transport Canada.


Contact your MDM. He will ensure that the aircraft is eligible for importation and write a letter stating such. This will allow you to get a Certificate of Registration for your aircraft.


Depending on how complete your import or export package is, it may take as little as two days. If the package is incomplete eg. unapproved modifications, AWD's not complied with, incomplete weight and balance reports, it may take several weeks.
